The Tragic Plight of a Nation is the English translation of ජාතියේ ඛේදවාචකය (2013). It was translated by Badre Rodrigo and published by Ravaya in May 2014. Victor Ivan argues that Sri Lanka was modernised only on the surface under British rule. “The country looked modern outwardly yet within the vision and attitudes it was archaic.” No movement since Anagarika Dharmapala, the left included, built a democratic vision strong enough to transform the nation’s thinking.
The booklet moves through four parts: a look back at colonial history, liberalism and democracy, “the infertility of Sri Lankan visionary thinking”, and the loss of political morality from the Donoughmore Commission to the 1978 constitution and beyond. It ends with seven points for a new social movement that would stay outside party politics. That movement would be started by a small, mixed group of honest and courageous people from no single caste, creed or faith.
