As I See It is a selection of Victor Ivan’s articles on Sri Lanka’s development and its political system. In a two-line preface, he says the collection is meant to give readers a basic grounding in both subjects. The first part, on social and economic development, has twenty-two articles. They cover vocational training for school dropouts, the crisis in education, school reform, foreign employment, the private medical college dispute, agriculture and poverty, tourism, an oppressive tax policy, transport and e-Sri Lanka.
The second part, on the political and institutional system, has thirteen articles. Their subjects include lessons from Hong Kong’s fight against corruption, the bribery commission, elections and the power of money, political funding, and the 17th Amendment and the Elections Commission. Others deal with the judiciary and the executive, the ethics of judges, and the executive presidency. The book closes by asking whether the country can be changed for the better. The back cover recommends it to general readers as well as to students of sociology, political science and business management.
