Media Gone Astray looks at the role Sri Lanka’s media has played. Victor Ivan argues that it has acted not as a saviour of the country or its people but as a creator and amplifier of confusion. He holds media institutions and journalists as responsible as politicians for the country’s backwardness. A media culture that resists pressure from government, owners and advertisers, and works independently, fearlessly, ethically and professionally, is in his view essential to Sri Lanka’s progress.
The book starts with the history of writing in Sri Lanka and its early periodicals. It then follows D.R. Wijewardena, who turned newspapers into a capitalist industry, and the “newspaper revolution” led by the editor D.B. Dhanapala. Next it asks where the media went wrong, and it ends by asking how the media can be brought back on course. Its stated aim is to uncover the causes of the media’s decline and to build the climate of ideas needed for change for the better.
