අයිවර් ජෙනිංග්ස් හා රංජිතම් ගුණරත්නම්
To the student leaders of Peradeniya the man who made the university looks like an alien and a traitor, and a student leader of the JVP’s second insurrection looks like an ideal hero. Ivan takes that as the measure of what has become of the universities, and sets beside it the arithmetic: fewer than two in a hundred children who enter grade one ever take a degree, and of the 44 per cent who qualify at A level only 14 per cent get a place.

It is not only the politicians who have made the country wretched, Ivan writes: it is the unreason that rules the society, and the educated who hold the ideological ground are less educated than the unlettered. From the Peradeniya hostel dispute he turns to C. Suntharalingam, whom he calls the political midwife who cut Prabhakaran’s cord, and to Nalin de Silva, who he says would earn the same honour on the day a Sinhala Prabhakaran is born.
