Rescuing Lanka was written to bring Victor Ivan’s long-running argument about Sri Lanka’s social, economic and political problems to a logical conclusion. He traces the crisis to one central failure. The national state and democratic government inherited from the British needed a single Sri Lankan nation and a democratic society, with divisions of caste, race and religion kept to a minimum. That was achieved neither during the independence movement nor after it. He sees the executive presidency as the culmination of this distorted development.
The book is in four parts. The first compares India, which won independence together with a united nation and a democratic society, with Sri Lanka, which did not. The second asks, historically, where Sri Lanka went wrong. The third follows how politics lost its civility, period by period, from 1947 to 2010. The last part sets out how Lanka might be saved. It calls for a Gandhian alternative political movement to build a new society based on virtue and pluralism, one that could create a new Sri Lankan nation, a democratic society and a fitting political system.
