Paradise in Tears is the English edition of Victor Ivan’s photographic history, published in September 2008 alongside the Sinhala කඳුළු සලන පාරාදීසය. It grew out of a Sahajeevana Centre for Coexistence exhibition of the same name, which took visitors through Sri Lanka’s history and conflict from 1815 to 1994. The Centre published the book with support from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the German Embassy in Colombo. It was translated by D.S.S. Mayadunne and K.A.N. Perera, and edited for language by Faye Ruck-Nightingale.

The book has four parts: from feudalism to capitalism, agitation for political reforms, gaining independence, and the decline in the rule of law and the rise of violence. In his foreword, Victor Ivan argues that Sri Lanka’s political system and its ethnic question are bound together, and that the solution lies in addressing both at once. He also observes that every party to the conflict acted in a competitive and retaliatory spirit rather than with a visionary approach. The book was produced to educate rather than for profit, and was priced only to cover its cost.
