Paradise in Tears is a photographic history of modern Sri Lanka, built on pictures Victor Ivan gathered over many years. It brings together 444 photographs, each with a caption or short essay, from sources including the Sri Lanka National Archives, the Royal Commonwealth Society, the Times of Ceylon, Associated Newspapers of Ceylon and the Ravaya collection. The book has four parts: from feudalism to capitalism, the campaigns for reform, independence, and the breakdown of the rule of law. It runs from the beginning of British colonial rule to the assassination of President Premadasa in 1993.

In the preface, Victor Ivan argues that Sri Lanka’s political system and its ethnic question are bound together, and that neither can be solved without the other. The book was produced to inform rather than for profit, and was priced close to its production cost. It was published with support from the German Embassy in Colombo and the Sahajeevana Centre for Coexistence, and has an introduction by Dr Kumar Rupesinghe. It also inspired Dharmasiri Bandaranayake’s documentary history of Sri Lanka, which he made for Sahajeevana in 2009. An English edition followed.
