An Unfinished Struggle is the English edition of නොනිමි අරගලය, translated by D.S.S. Mayadunne and first published in 2003, about a year after the Sinhala original. It tells the story of a long and difficult struggle, still unfinished, that an investigative journalist in Sri Lanka waged for the dignity and independence of the judiciary.
It began with Ravaya’s exposure of a magistrate accused of raping a woman. When the Attorney General protected the magistrate, Victor Ivan turned his pen against the Attorney General. An inquiry into misconduct charges against the Attorney General began in the Supreme Court. While it was under way, the President appointed him Chief Justice, and the editor’s struggle became one against the head of the judiciary.
The book follows what came next: the motion to impeach the Chief Justice, the petitions and court order that stopped parliament from taking it up, the constitutional crisis that followed, and the dissolution of parliament.
By the time the translation appeared, the crisis around Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva had not ended, so the English edition added a new chapter on what happened after the Sinhala book. In the acknowledgements, Victor Ivan records how readers inside the legal world responded. A retired Supreme Court judge told him that tears came to his eyes as he read. A retired chief justice, asked whether he had read it, first said he had not, then admitted: “Yes, I read the whole book. I cannot imagine how this man remains in the post.”
The book is dedicated to the lawyers Suranjith Hewamanne and Elmo Perera and the judges G.D. Kulatillake and Sunil Perera, “who stood up bravely and courageously against the extremely corrupt and vicious administration in the judiciary of Sri Lanka, disregarding the losses their action might cause them.” A second edition followed in 2007.
