චෙස් මූලධර්ම හා තාක්ෂණය is a complete guide to chess in Sinhala, and an unusual book among Victor Ivan’s political and historical work. Chess was a lifelong interest; in prison, he wrote, it helped him overcome loneliness and monotony. He also returned to it in his later book ජීවිතයේ ප්‍රබෝධය මරණයේ අසිරිය.

The book was first published in 1994. As chess spread rapidly in Sri Lankan schools, there was almost no comprehensive book on the game in Sinhala, and this one set out to fill that gap.

Ten chapters take the reader from a short history of chess and its basic rules, through a practical game that shows how play unfolds, to chess notation, simple endings, the opening, elementary combinations, the middlegame and the endgame. A final chapter covers seventy pages of biographies and selected best games of the world champions, from Wilhelm Steinitz to Viswanathan Anand.

The revised edition was prepared by national chess champion Athula Russel. The original was written in English (descriptive) notation; he added algebraic notation alongside it, so that players who know either system can use the book. The fifth printing appeared in July 2012.
