සාම ගිවිසුමේ සිට දෝෂාභියෝගය දක්වා collects nineteen of the political analyses Victor Ivan wrote for Ravaya, the magazine and later the newspaper, under the pen name Kalinga. In the introduction he recalls that the column was one of Ravaya’s most popular features and one of its most dangerous. The pieces he wrote during the JVP’s second insurrection drew strong opposition from both the JVP and the security forces. While J.R. Jayewardene was President, the author was summoned and advised to stop the column.
He chose the pieces to cover the main events of the period, each with a background note. Together they read as an analysis of the years when Sri Lanka was caught in crisis. They begin with the Indian food drop over Jaffna and the Indo-Lanka Peace Accord of 1987, and move through the assassination of Vijaya Kumaranatunga, an appeal to the young rebels to think again, and the presidential and parliamentary elections of 1988–89. Later pieces cover the political legacy of Rohana Wijeweera, the government’s short-lived accommodation with Prabhakaran and its collapse, and the death of Ranjan Wijeratne. The collection ends with the brutal reality of the ethnic war, the question of democracy or dictatorship, and the challenge of the impeachment motion against President Premadasa.
