Diary of the Arrest and Imprisonment
අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම හා සිරගතවීම පිළිබඳ දිනපොත
Victor Ivan’s own account of his arrest on the morning of 4 April 1971 and of the sixteen weeks that followed, written in the first person and kept by date. It is the earliest document in the archive and the only one in which he is the subject rather than the reporter.

1971 අප්රේල් 4 වන ඉරිදා
Peliyagoda → Wattala → Kadana → CID headquarters, Fort
උදේ 4ට පමණ පෑලියගොඩ මූලස්ථාන පරීක්ෂක ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් ප්රමුඛ පොලිස් කණ්ඩායමක් විසින් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම.
මා අත්අඩංගුවට ගන්නාවිට එම නිවසේ ජේ.එස්. ජයවික්රම, පොලින් ජයවික්රම, ඇන්ටන් ජයවික්රම, බොලොසවි ජයවික්රම හා නීලාවතී ජයවික්රම යන අය එහි සිටියා.
මා ජිප් රියක නංවාගෙන පලමුවෙන්ම වත්තල පොලිසියට ගෙනගියා. එහිදී පොලිස් පරීක්ෂකවරයා මගෙන් වොල්ක්ස් වැගන් රථය තිබෙන්නේ කොහේදැයි ඇසුවා. මම එය නොදන්නා බව කීවා.
නැවත මම එම ජිප් රියේ නංවාගෙන කදානේ රංජිත් සිල්වාගේ ගෙදරට ගෙනගියා. ගෙය බදුගත් පුද්ගලයා මමදැයි රංජිත්ගේ පියාගෙන් ඇසූ විට ඔහු ඔව් කීවා.
නැවත මා ජිප් රියට නංවාගෙන කොටුව රහස් පොලිස් මූලස්ථානයට ගෙන ආවා. මම ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් සමග තරප්පුපෙල නගින අතර මගදී පී. වර්ණකුලසූරිය තවත් නිලධාරීන් කිහිප දෙනෙකු සමග තරප්පුපෙල නගිමින් සිටියා. ඔහුට තදින් පහර දී තිබෙන බව පෙනෙන්නට තිබුනා. ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් වර්ණකුලසූරියට මා පෙන්වා මෙයා හඳුනනවාදැයි ඇසුවා. එක දවසක් දැක තිබෙන බව ඔහු යටහත් පහත් ලෙස කීවා.
ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් මා සහකාර පොලිස් අධිකාරී හයිඩ් සිල්වාගේ (ඊ.6) කාමරයට ගෙන ගියා. මා එහි යනවිට සහකාර පොලිස් අධිකාරී හයිඩ් සිල්වා, පෑලියගොඩ එවකට ASP මෙරිල්, පොලිස් පරීක්ෂක ජෙගනාදන්, ශරිනි විජේසූරිය හා තවත් පොලිස් නිලධාරියෙක් එහි සිටියා.
ඔවුන් සියලු දෙනා එකතු වී උදේ 8.30 පමණ වන තුරු මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා. ඉන්පසු මා කාමරයෙන් බැහැරව උප පොලිස් පරීක්ෂකවරයකුගේ රැකවරණය යටතේ තැබුවා.
උදේ 9ට පමණ උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්න පැමිණ මගෙන් නම ඇසුවා. (අසභ්ය ආකාරයෙන්). මම නම කී විට ඔහු යන්නට ගියා. ඔහු තව ටික වෙලාවකින් ෆයිල් එකක් රැගෙන ආවා. නරාවල බී.එම්. ගුණදාස නැමැත්තෙක් දුන් කටඋත්තරයක මා ගැන සදහන් වී තිබුනා. ඔහු ඒ ගැන මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා.
ඉන්පසු ඔහු මා කේ.එස්. ද සිල්වාගේ කාමරයට ගෙනගියා. කේ.එස්. ද සිල්වා මා හට ඉදගන්නටයැයි කී විට මම ඉදිරියේ තිබෙන පුටුවකින් ඉදගත්තා. මට බිම ඉදගන්නා ලෙස උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්න අසභ්ය ආකාරයෙන් නියෝග කලා. කේ.එස්. ද සිල්වා මගෙන් ටික වෙලාවක් ප්රශ්න කලා.
දවල් කාලයේ විටින් විට විවිධ නිලධාරීන් මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා. හයිඩ් සිල්වා මහතා හවසත් මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා. මා සියල්ලම කියා තිබෙන්නේය යන්නෙන් ඔහු සිතා ඒ ගැන තෘප්තිමත්ව සිටියේ.
හයිඩ් සිල්වා මහතාගේ නියෝගය පරිදි රාත්රී 9.30ට පමණ හයිඩ් සිල්වාගේ කාමරයේදීම (E.6) සාජන් සමරකෝන් 3207 මගෙන් කටඋත්තරයක් ටයිප් කරගනු ලැබුවා. ඒ අවස්ථාවේ හයිඩ් සිල්වා මහතාත් එහි සිටියා. එලිවන යාමේ එය අවසන් කලා.

Arrested about 4 in the morning by a police party led by Dharmasiri Weerakoon, Chief Inspector at Peliyagoda.
When I was arrested, J.S. Jayawickrama, Polin Jayawickrama, Anton Jayawickrama, Bolosavi Jayawickrama and Neelawathie Jayawickrama were in the house.
They put me in a jeep and took me first to the Wattala police station. There the inspector asked me where the Volkswagen was. I said I did not know.
They put me back in the jeep and took me to Ranjith Silva’s house at Kadana. When they asked Ranjith’s father whether I was the man who had rented the house, he said yes.
They put me in the jeep again and brought me to the CID headquarters in the Fort. As I was climbing the stairs with Dharmasiri Weerakoon, P. Warnakulasuriya was coming up with several other officers. It was plain that he had been badly beaten. Dharmasiri Weerakoon pointed at me and asked him whether he knew this man. Meekly, he said he had seen me once.
Dharmasiri Weerakoon took me to the room of Assistant Superintendent Hyde Silva (E.6). When I went in, Assistant Superintendent Hyde Silva, the then ASP at Peliyagoda Merril, Inspector Jeganadan, Sharni Wijesuriya and one other police officer were there.
All of them together questioned me until about half past eight in the morning. I was then taken out of the room and placed in the custody of a sub-inspector.
About nine, Upali Seneviratne came and asked my name. (Obscenely.) When I gave it he went away. A little later he came back with a file. A statement given by one B.M. Gunadasa of Narawala mentioned me. He questioned me about it.
Then he took me to K.S. de Silva’s room. When K.S. de Silva told me to sit, I sat on a chair in front of me. Upali Seneviratne obscenely ordered me to sit on the floor. K.S. de Silva questioned me for a while.
Through the day various officers questioned me from time to time. Mr Hyde Silva questioned me again in the evening. He was satisfied, believing I had told everything.
On Mr Hyde Silva’s order, about half past nine at night, in Hyde Silva’s own room (E.6), Sergeant Samarakoon 3207 typed a statement from me. Mr Hyde Silva was present. It was finished at daybreak.
NOTE
Peliyagoda is a northern suburb of Colombo. He is taken from a private house at dawn, two days before the insurrection begins.
5 APRIL1971 . MONDAY
1971 අප්රේල් 5 වන සඳුදා

වැල්ලවාය හා මොනරාගල පහරදීම් සිදුවී තිබෙන බව උදේ දැනගන්නට ලැබුනා.
“ඉක්මනින් පහරදීමට අදහසක් නැත්නම් වැල්ලවාය හා මොනරාගල පහරදීම් සිදුවී තිබෙන්නේ කෙසේද?” යැයි හයිඩ් සිල්වා මහතා 10 පමණ මගෙන් ඇසුවා. ඒ අවස්ථාවේ A.S.P. M.K.J. පෙරේරාත් එතන සිටියා. සමහරවිට පොලිසිය විසින් ඔවුන්ට හිරිහැර කරන්නට ගොස් එසේ වන්නට ඇතැයි මම කීවා.
සවස 5 පමණ වන තුරු කාමරයක වසා දමා තිබුනා. ඊට පසු තවත් කාමරයක වසා තිබුනා. රාත්රී 9ට පමණ තවත් නිලධාරීන් දෙදෙනකු සමග තවත් කාමරයක වසා දැමුවා.
වෙනත් කාමරවල සිටි අයට යම් යම් නිලධාරීන් කරන පහරදීම් නිසා ඒවායෙන් ඔවුන් විලාප නගන හඬ ඇසුනා.
රාත්රී 3ට පමණ වෙනත් නිලධාරීන් පිරිසක් පහර දෙන්නට පටන් ගත්තා. එක් නිලධාරියෙක් විසින් යටි බඩට ගසන ලද පහරකින් මම සිහිමූර්ඡා වූවා. සිහි ආවිටත් මා ඇද වැටී සිටි තැනම දෑස් පියාගෙන සිටියෙමි.
In the morning we came to know that the attacks at Wellawaya and Monaragala had taken place.
“If there was no intention of attacking soon, how have the attacks at Wellawaya and Monaragala happened?” Mr Hyde Silva asked me about ten. ASP M.K.J. Perera was also there at the time. I said that perhaps it had come about because the police had gone and harassed them.
I was shut in a room until about five in the evening. After that I was shut in another room. About nine at night I was shut in yet another room with two more officers.
From the other rooms came the sound of men crying out under the beating of one officer or another.
About three in the morning another group of officers began to beat me. A blow to my lower abdomen from one of them knocked me unconscious. Even when I came round I lay where I had fallen, with my eyes shut.
NOTE
The insurrection opens. Police stations across the south are attacked on the night of 5 April. He learns of it from the men questioning him about it.
6 April 1971 · TUESDAY
1971 අප්රේල් 6 වන අඟහරුවාදා

උදේ පහට පමණ මා වෙනත් කාමරයකට ගෙනගියා. (පුංචිබංඩා සෙනෙවිරත්නගේ කාමරයට) පහරදීම්වලට ලක්වී තවත් තරුණයින් දෙදෙනකු බිම දිග ඇදී සිටිනු දැක්කෙමි. මට කාමරයේ එක් මුල්ලක දණගහගෙන සිටින ලෙසට අණ කෙරිණ.
උදේ හයට පමණ මහරගමින් පොලිස් කණ්ඩායමක් අප සිටි කාමරයට ආවේය. ඔවුන් හෙල්මට් පැලඳ සිටි අතර ආයුධ සන්නද්ධව සිටියෝය. පොලිස් පරීක්ෂකවරයා මහරගම පොලිසියට සිදුවූ පහරදීම ගැන විස්තරයක් කල අතර අනෙක් පොලිස් කොස්තාපල්වරුන් අපට පහර දුන්නේය. ඔවුන් තමන්ට පහරදීමට උපයෝගී කරගත්තා යැයි කියන ගෙඩි බෝම්බ කිහිපයක් පුංචිබංඩා සෙනෙවිරත්න පොලිස් පරීක්ෂකවරයාට බාර දුන්නේය.
වෙනත් ස්ථානයක දණගහගෙන සිටි අනෙක් දෙදෙනාට කරපාචිය කරන ලෙසට එහි සිටි නිලධාරීන් බලකරන ලදී. එම ක්රියාව නොනවත්වා පැය 3/4ක් පමණ ඔවුන් කරගෙන යන්නට සිදු වූයේ එහි සිටි නිලධාරීන්ගේ පහරදීම්වලට ලක්වූ නිසාය. එහි සිටි කිසිවෙකුට ආහාර හෝ ජලය නොලැබුන අතර විටින් විට ඔවුන්ගේ පහරදීම්වලට ලක්විය.
දවල් 2ට පමණ එහි පැමිණි නිලධාරීන් පිරිසක් මට පහරදී ජීප් රියක නංවා ගත්තේය. රොස්මිඩ් නඩුවේ තුන්වන විත්තිකරු සෝමරත්න අමරසිංහගේ වැඩිමහල් සොහොයුරු කොල්ලුපිටිය සේවින්ස් බැංකුවේ අමරසිංහ ද එහි විය.
ජීප් රිය ගාලු මුවදොර දෙසට යන්නට වූ අතර එහි සිටි නිලධාරීන් විටින් විට අපට පහර දුන්නේය.
හමුදා මූලස්ථානය අසල විශේෂ මුරපොලකදී අවසරපත් පෙන්වීම සඳහා ජිප් රිය නතර කලේය. බීමත්ව සිටි මුර සෙබලෙක් මැෂින් තුවක්කුවෙන් මගේ පපුවට පහර දුන්නේය.
හමුදා මූලස්ථානයට අප ගෙනගිය පසු විශේෂ සෝදිසි කිරීමකට අප දෙදෙනා ලක්කොට වෙන් වෙන් වශයෙන් ගෙන පහර දී සිරමැදිරි දෙකකට අප දෙදෙනා දැමුවේය. මා සිටි සිරමැදිරියේ පී. වර්ණකුලසූරිය ද විය. අමරසිංහ සිටි සිරමැදිරියේ නන්දසිරි පෙරේරා සිටිබව පසුව දැනගතිමි.
About five in the morning I was taken to another room (Punchibanda Seneviratne’s room). I saw two more young men who had been beaten, stretched out on the floor. I was ordered to kneel in one corner of the room.
About six a police party from Maharagama came into the room. They were wearing helmets and were armed. The inspector gave an account of the attack on the Maharagama police station, and the other constables beat us. They handed over to Inspector Punchibanda Seneviratne several grenade bombs they said had been used against them.
The officers there forced the two others, kneeling in another place, to do karapachchiya. They had to keep it up without stopping for about three quarters of an hour because of the beating they took from the officers there. Nobody there was given food or water, and from time to time they were beaten.
About two in the afternoon a group of officers came, beat me and put me in a jeep. Amarasinghe of the Collupitiya Savings Bank, elder brother of Somaratne Amarasinghe, the third defendant in the Rosmead case, was also in it.
The jeep headed towards Galle Face, and the officers in it beat us from time to time.
The jeep stopped at a special checkpoint near army headquarters to show its pass. A drunken sentry struck my chest with a machine gun.
After we were brought into army headquarters the two of us were put through a special search, taken separately, beaten, and put into two cells. P. Warnakulasuriya was in my cell. I learned later that Nandasiri Perera was in Amarasinghe’s.

19 April 1971
1971 අප්රේල් 19 වන සඳුදා

රාත්රී අප සිටි සිරමැදිරියට පැමිණි හමුදා නිලධාරීන් පිරිසක් අප සිටි සිරමැදිරියේ පහන් නිවා දමා අපට පහර දුන්නේය. ඔවුන්ගෙන් එක් අයෙකු ඔලුවට එල්ල කල රයිෆල් බෙනට් පහරකින් මම සිහිමූර්ඡා විය. මා අවදි වන විට මා ලේ ගොඩක් මත වැටී සිටි අතර ඔලුවේ දකුණු පස පැලී තිබුනේය.
At night a party of army officers came to our cell, put out the lamps and beat us. One of them struck my head with a rifle butt and I lost consciousness. When I woke I was lying in a pool of blood, and the right side of my head was split open.
20 April 1971
1971 අප්රේල් 20 වන අඟහරුවාදා

දහවල් 11 පමණ පෑලියගොඩින් පැමිණි පොලිස් පිරිසක් මා හා අමරසිංහ හතරවන තට්ටුවට ගෙන ගියා. A.S.P. හයිඩ් සිල්වා තවදුරටත් මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා. රහස් පොලිසියේ සිටි ඡායාරූප ශිල්පියා විසින් මාගේ උඩුකයෙන් ඡායාරූප කිහිපයක් ලබා ගත්තා. රාත්රී හයිඩ් සිල්වා මහතා විසින් මගෙන් කටඋත්තරයක් ගනු ලැබුවා. එය ටයිප් කලේ SI සෝමසුන්දරම් විසින්ය.
About eleven a police party from Peliyagoda took Amarasinghe and me to the fourth floor. ASP Hyde Silva questioned me further. The CID’s photographer took several photographs of my upper body. At night Mr Hyde Silva took a statement from me. It was typed by SI Somasundaram.
NOTE
The photographs are taken the day after the rifle-butt injury. If they survive in the case file, they are the only contemporaneous images of his condition in custody.
21 April 1971
1971 අප්රේල් 21 වන බදාදා
Peliyagoda → Aluthkade court → Aluthkade prison
හිමිදිරි උදේ 5ට පමණ පෑලියගොඩ පොලිසියේ සාජන්වරයෙකු වූ සමරකෝන් නැමැත්තෙක් මා හා අමරසිංහ රහස් පොලිසියට අයත් වෝල්ස් වැගන් රථයක නංවාගෙන පෑලියගොඩ පොලිසියට ගෙන ගියා. විද්යාලංකාර විශ්වවිද්යාලයේ උපාධි අපේක්ෂකයෙකු එහි පොලිස් සිරමැදිරියේ සිටියා. තව ටික වේලාවකින් අමරසිංහ නිදහස් කර යවන බව ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් කීවා.
උදේ 9.30ට පමණ මා රියක නංවාගෙන අලුත්කඩේ උසාවියට ගෙන ගියා. එහිදී නඩුකාරවරයා ඉදිරියට ඉදිරිපත් කරන තුරු රිමාන්ඩ් මැදිරියක තබා ගනු ලැබුවා. එහි සිටි අය අතර තල්පාවිල විජේවංශ හිමි, ටී. මහානාම හිමි, H.K. සුනිල් ශාන්ත, ජී. රිබට් යන අයද විය.
මා ඒ අවස්ථාව වන විට ඉතාමත්ව වෙහෙසට පත්වී සිටියේ. කොණ්ඩය ලෙයින් කැටි ගැසී තිබුණ අතර ඇඳුම් ලෙයින් රතු වී තිබුණා. කූඩුවට නැංවූ විට මා සිටින තත්ත්වය නඩුකාරවරයාට පැහැදිලි කිරීමට මම බලාපොරොත්තු වුණා. නමුත් මා කූඩුවට නැංගුවේ නැහැ. මා භාරව ගිය පොලිස් නිලධාරියා කරුණු ඉදිරිපත් කල විට මා රිමාන්ඩ් කර තබන ලෙසට නියෝග කලා.
රිමාන්ඩ් සිරකරුවන් තාවකාලිකව රඳවා තබාගන්නා සිරමැදිරියක දවල් 2 වන තුරු අනෙක් අය සමඟ තබා ගත්තා. ඉන් පසු තවත් 30ක පමණ පිරිසක් සමඟ මා අලුත්කඩේ බන්ධනාගාරයට ගෙන ගියා. බන්ධනාගාරයට ඇතුලත් කරගනු ලැබුවේ පහරදීමෙන් පසුවයි.
The dock
About five in the morning a sergeant of the Peliyagoda police named Samarakoon put Amarasinghe and me in a CID Volkswagen and took us to the Peliyagoda police station. A degree candidate of Vidyalankara University was in the police cell there. A little later Dharmasiri Weerakoon said Amarasinghe was to be released.
About half past nine I was put in a vehicle and taken to the Aluthkade court. There I was held in a remand cage until I should be produced before the magistrate. Among those in it were the Ven. Thalpawila Wijewansa, the Ven. T. Mahanama, H.K. Sunil Shantha and G. Ribert.
By that time I was utterly exhausted. My hair was matted with clotted blood and my clothes were red with it. I expected, when I was raised into the dock, to explain my condition to the magistrate. But I was not raised into the dock. When the police officer in charge of me put the facts, the order was made that I be remanded.
I was held with the others until two in the afternoon in a cell where remand prisoners are temporarily kept. After that I was taken with about thirty more to the Aluthkade prison. We were admitted to the prison only after being beaten.

1971 මැයි 14 වන සිකුරාදා
C.R.P. prison → Vidyalankara camp
අපි 100 දෙනෙකු පමණ C.R.P. බන්ධනාගාරයේ සිට විද්යාලංකාර කඳවුරට ගෙන ගියා.
About a hundred of us were taken from the C.R.P. prison to the Vidyalankara camp.

රජය විසින් පත් කරන ලද විශේෂ පර්යේෂණ කමිටුවේ පියසේන විල්බට් (මිනින්දෝරුවෙක්) මහතාට කටඋත්තරයක් දෙනු ලැබුවා.
I gave a statement to Mr Piyasena Wilbert (a surveyor) of the special commission of inquiry appointed by the government.
NOTE
he only occasion in the diary on which he gives evidence to a body other than the police. If the commission’s records survive, this statement would be a second contemporaneous account.
1 June 1971
1971 ජූනි 1 වන අඟහරුවාදා
Vidyalankara camp
උදේ අප විසින් ආහාර වර්ජනයක් ඇරඹුවා. මර්ධනකාරී තත්වය නිසා කුඩා කණ්ඩායමක් පමණයි සහභාගී උනේ. පාලකයින් බලය යොදා මර්ධනය කිරීමට උත්සාහ කලා. සහභාගී වූ කුඩා පිරිස අධිෂ්ඨාන සහගත ලෙස සිටි නිසා එවැනි ක්රියාමාර්ගයක් තුලින් මැඩ පවත්වන්න පුළුවන් උනේ නැහැ. අවසානයේ අපි ජයගත්තා. දවල් 11 පමණ වන විට අපට සියලුම ඉල්ලීම් ලැබුණා.
In the morning we began a hunger strike. Because of the repressive conditions only a small group took part. The authorities tried to put it down by force. Since the small number who took part held firm, it could not be crushed that way. In the end we won. By about eleven we had been granted all our demands.

Three days later he is named as the organiser of this strike and beaten for it.

1971 ජූලි 2 වන සිකුරාදා
Vidyalankara camp — the shed and the office
අප 200 දෙනෙකු පමණ සිටියේ කුඩා පොල් අතු මඩුවකය. එහි සිටි කිසිවකුට නිදියගැන්ම සඳහා මෙට්ට ලැබුනේ නැත. පොල් අතු වියාගෙන පස් පොලොව මතය බුදිය ගත්තේ.
උදේ 8ට පමණ එම මඩුවේ සියලු දෙනාටම එලියට එන ලෙස ප්රධාන ජේලර් වූ ධර්මවර්ධනගෙන් නියෝගයක් ලැබුනා. අපි සියලු දෙනාම මඩුවෙන් එලියට ආවා. වෙනත් ගොඩනැගිලිවල සිටි අය කිසිවකුට එම ගොඩනැගිලිවලින් එලියට නොබසින ලෙස ඔහු තවදුරටත් නියෝග කලා. දහ දෙනෙකු ඉදිරියෙන් සිටුවා, ඔවුන් පිටුපස පෙලට සිටින ලෙසත් ඉන් පසුව සියලු දෙනාම අත් ඔසවන ලෙසටත් ඔහු නියෝග කලා.
ස්වයංක්රීය රයිෆල් හා මැෂින් තුවක්කු ගත් හමුදා සෙබලුන් විශාල පිරිසක් කම්බි වැට දෙපස අප වෙත තුවක්කු අමුණාගෙන සීරුවෙන් සිටියා. සන්නද්ධ රථ කිහිපයක්ම කඳවුර වටේ සෙමින් සෙමින් කැරකුනා. හුඟ දෙනෙකු බියට පත් වී සිටියා.
ජේලර් ධර්මවර්ධන කථාවක් පැවැත්තුවා. තමන්ට අවශ්ය නම් සියලු දෙනාව විනාශ කර දැමිය හැකි බව ඔහු කීවා. සාමයට හා පාලනයට බාධාවක් වන අයුරින් කටයුතු කරන අය මේ අතර සිටිනවානම් පෙන්වා දෙන ලෙස ඔහු ඉල්ලා සිටියා. කිහිප දෙනෙකු මා ජේලර්වරයාට පෙන්වා වර්ජනය සංවිධානය කලේ මම බව කියා සිටියා.
ජේලර්වරයා මා ඉදිරියට කැඳවා මා කන්තෝරුවට ගෙන යන ලෙසට නිලධාරීන්ට නියෝග කලා. වෙනත් බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන් තිදෙනාත් මට පහර දෙමින් කන්තෝරු කාමරයට ගෙන ගියා. කන්තෝරු කාමරයේ තැනක් නියම කොට එහි දණගසාගෙන සිටින ලෙසට ඔවුන් මට නියෝග කලා. ටික වේලාවකින් තවත් තරුණයින් 10 දෙනෙකු පමණ ගෙන ආවා. බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන් 40 පමණ වටවී අප සියලු දෙනාටම දහවල් එකට පමණ වන තුරු පහර දුන්නා. පහර දීම් ආරම්භ කලේ ජේලර් ධර්මවර්ධන විසින් මාගේ ඉලඇටයකට එල්ල කල පය පහරකින්. මා එවිට දණගසාගෙන අත් උස්සාගෙනයි සිටියේ.
දවල් එකට පමණ ජේලර් ධර්මවර්ධනගේ කාමරයට යන ලෙස අප සියලු දෙනාටම නියෝග කලා. අප බොහොමයක් දෙනෙකු ඇවිදිය නොහැකි තත්ත්වයකය සිටියේ. අපි අමාරුවෙන් බඩගාගෙන ඔහුගේ කාමරයට ගියා. ඔහු එහිදී අපට තදින් බැන වැදී මඩුවට ගිය පසු වෙනත් කිසිවකු සමග කථා නොකරන ලෙසත් සෑම පැයකට වරක්ම වාට්ටුව බාර නිලධාරියා හමුවී ඔහු ළඟ ඇති පොතෙහි වෙලාව යොදා අත්සන් තැබිය යුතු බවත් නියෝග කලා. මට ඇවිදීමය හැකි තත්ත්වයක් නොතිබුණු හෙයින් කිහිප දෙනෙකු මාව වත්තන් කරගෙන මඩුවට ගෙන ආවා. කඳවුරුවල සිටින තරුණයින් ඒ වන විට මහත් බියට පත්ව සිටි හෙයින් කිසිවකු අප සමග කතා කලේ නැත.
සවස හතරට පමණ කලුතර මහින්ද, තලවතුගොඩ විජේ සහ තවත් තිදෙනකු හා මම කන්තෝරුවට කැඳෙව්වා. නැවත එහි සිටි නිලධාරීන් විසින් අපට පහර දී නැවතත් බන්ධනාගාරයට අප සියලු දෙනාව ගෙනාවා. මෙම පහර දීම් නිසා මම මාස දෙකක් පමණ වේදනා වින්දා.
The shed
The camp
About two hundred of us were in a small shed of coconut thatch. Not one of us was given a mattress to sleep on. We slept on the bare earth under the woven fronds.
About eight in the morning an order came from the chief jailer, Dharmawardena, that everyone in the shed was to come out. We all came out. He further ordered that nobody in the other buildings was to come out of them. He ordered ten men to stand in front, the rest to line up behind them, and then everyone to raise their hands.
A large number of soldiers with automatic rifles and machine guns stood alert on both sides of the wire with their weapons trained on us. Several armoured cars circled the camp very slowly. Many were frightened.
Jailer Dharmawardena made a speech. He said that if he wished he could destroy every one of us. He asked that if there were among us any who acted so as to obstruct peace and order, they be pointed out. Several men pointed me out to the jailer and said that I had organised the strike.
The jailer called me forward and ordered the officers to take me to the office. Three other prison officers took me to the office room, beating me as they went. They fixed a place in the office room and ordered me to kneel there. A little later about ten more young men were brought in. About forty prison officers surrounded us and beat all of us until about one in the afternoon. The beating began with a kick from Jailer Dharmawardena to one of my ribs. I was kneeling at the time with my hands raised.
About one we were all ordered to go to Jailer Dharmawardena’s room. Most of us were in no condition to walk. We crawled there with difficulty. He abused us harshly and ordered that once we returned to the shed we were not to speak to anyone else, and that every hour we were to report to the officer in charge of the ward, enter the time in the book he kept, and sign it. Since I was in no condition to walk, several men carried me back to the shed. The young men in the camp were by then in such fear that nobody spoke to us.
About four in the afternoon Kaluthara Mahinda, Thalawathugoda Wije, three others and I were called to the office. The officers there beat us again and then brought us all back to the prison. I suffered pain from this beating for about two months.
NOTE
He is on remand at an improvised detention camp, moved there from the C.R.P. prison on 14 May with about a hundred others; the inquiry that will sentence him is still two years away. This is three days after the hunger strike he organised, which won its demands on the morning of 1 June. When the jailer asks for the men obstructing order to be pointed out, several of the two hundred point to him. The two months of pain he records at the end is the only injury in the diary for which he gives a duration.

The instrument
About nine in the morning IP Purasinghe took charge of me from the Magazine prison and brought me to Wijerama Mawatha. Ian Wickramanayake was not in the room. IP Suwaris, SI Patikirikorala, Leonard and Sunanda Deshapriya were in it. SI Patikirikorala pointed me out to Sunanda and asked him whether he knew me. He said yes. Then, holding me by the waist, he took me to Alerin Abeygunawardena’s room and presented me to him. Then he handed me to several other officers and ordered that I be taken up to the fourth floor. They took me to Upali Seneviratne’s room.
There were IP Ian Wickramanayake, IP Jeganadan, IP Wijesuriya, IP Upali Seneviratne, SI Palisena, SI Indradasa and PC Perera, and also T.D. de Silva, Piyathilaka, Ranjith de Silva, Anton Jayawickrama, Navy Vincent and M.D. Peter of the Inland Revenue Department.
Jeganadan, Wijesuriya and Seneviratne beat me severely. In Mr Upali Seneviratne’s hand was a special instrument made for beating. Inside an iron sheath was a spring, with a small iron ball fixed at its end, arranged so that it could be driven into the sheath and drawn out again as required. With it they struck my head, my elbows and my knees.
That evening Inspectors Upali Seneviratne and Jeganadan took me to the Fort police station and ordered that I be held there until the following day.

About eight in the morning Inspector Jeganadan took charge of me from the Fort police station and brought me to the fourth floor.
IP Wijesuriya, IP Seneviratne, SI Palisena, SI Indradasa, PC Perera, Piyathilaka, Ranjith, Anton, M.D. Peter and T.D. were there that day as well.
Mr Ian Wickramanayake came in during the day and directed an inspector to take Ranjith de Silva, who by then had chickenpox, to the IDH hospital, and to place a special guard on him.
About ten in the morning Ilanwelian was brought to Upali Seneviratne’s room. They beat me again that day.
In the evening Ian Wickramanayake telephoned Chief Inspector Ganegama of the Kuruduwatta police station and asked him to bring a vehicle to take me away. Mr Ganegama came about five and took me to the Kuruduwatta police station. Kalu Lucky was in a remand cage there.

About half past eight in the morning I was taken from the Kuruduwatta police station to the fourth floor. SI Palisena and Indradasa questioned Navy Vincent and beat him. Upali Seneviratne and Jeganadan questioned Ilanwelian, while Sharni Wijesuriya and SI Patikirikorala questioned me. Mr Ian Wickramanayake ordered that Piyathilaka be produced in court and brought back the following day.
About five that evening PC Perera put Piyaseeli, Dammika, S.D. Silva and me in a jeep and took us to the Collupitiya police station. They were left there and I was taken to the Kuruduwatta police station. Kalu Lucky was in a cell at Kuruduwatta that day too.

The statement

In the evening Mr Upali Seneviratne took me to the Kuruduwatta police station in his own car. He asked me several questions about a tape recorder of Kalu Lucky’s that was in my keeping.

The clinic
In the morning I was brought to Wijerama Mawatha. SI Patikirikorala typed more of the statement.
My ear had gone septic because IP Jeganadan had covered both my ears and struck them again and again. In the afternoon Mr Ian Wickramanayake sent me with two police officers to the ENT clinic. There I gave the chief medical officer an account of the beatings carried out on the fourth floor. At night I was held at the Kuruduwatta police station.
NOTE
The only medical examination recorded in the diary, and the only occasion on which he describes the fourth floor to anyone outside the police. Any record the clinic kept would be the strongest corroboration available.

උදේ විජේරාම මාවතට ගෙන ආවා. ඉයන් වික්රමනායක, SI පැටිකිරිකෝරාළ තවත් කොස්තාපල්වරුන් දෙදෙනකු සමග මා ජිප් රියක නංවාගෙන 4 වන තට්ටුවට ගෙන ගියා.
අපි එහි යන විට උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්නගේ කාමරයේ දෙල්ගොඩ රජා සිටියා. ජෙගනාදන් හා සෙනෙවිරත්න යන පොලිස් පරීක්ෂකවරුන් ඔහුට පහරදෙමින් සිටියා. ඔහුගේ මුහුණ ඉදිමී තිබුනා.
ඉයන් වික්රමනායක එහි නැවතුන අතර ශර්නි විජේසූරිය හට එක්වුනා. අපි සියලු දෙනාම පෑලියගොඩ පොලීසියට ගියා.
ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් විසින් වැලි අමුණෙන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් අවි ආයුධ අප වෙත ඉදිරිපත් කලා. මා සියලු ආයුධ රංජිත්ගෙන් ලබාගත් බවත් කී විට ධර්මසිරි වීරකෝන් මට පහර දුන්නා.
දවල් 11.30ට පමණ මා නැවත විජේරාම මාවතට ගෙන ආවා. දවල් 1.30ට පමණ ටයිප් කරන ලද ප්රකාශයට මා අත්සන් තැබුවා. මා එය කියවා බැලුවේ නැහැ.
සවස 3ට පමණ මා නැවත මැගසින් බන්ධනාගාරයට බාර දෙනු ලැබුවා.
In the morning I was brought to Wijerama Mawatha. Ian Wickramanayake, SI Patikirikorala and two more constables put me in a jeep and took me to the fourth floor.
When we got there, Delgoda Raja was in Upali Seneviratne’s room. Inspectors Jeganadan and Seneviratne were beating him. His face was swollen.
Ian Wickramanayake stayed there and Sharni Wijesuriya joined us. We all went to the Peliyagoda police station.
Dharmasiri Weerakoon produced before us the weapons seized at the sand embankment. When I said I had obtained all the weapons from Ranjith, Dharmasiri Weerakoon beat me.
About half past eleven I was brought back to Wijerama Mawatha. About half past one I signed the typed statement. I did not read it.
About three in the afternoon I was handed back to the Magazine prison.
15 July 1971

In the morning SI Patikirikorala took charge of me from the prison. Loku Athula was in the jeep waiting in front of it. With the two of us it went to the Welikada prison, where Viraj and Sisil were put aboard. Then it went to the C.R.P., where Piyathilaka was put aboard.
Then it went to Wijerama (Ian Wickramanayake was not there), stayed a while (we were not taken out of the jeep) and went on to the Kuruduwatta police station. Viraj and Sisil were held there.
Then I was held at the Collupitiya police station. Loku Athula was taken to Bambalapitiya.
I spent that day at the Collupitiya police station.

උදේම SI පැටිකිරිකෝරාළ මා ජිප් රියකට නංවාගත්තේය. එහි විරාජ් සහ සිසිල් සිටියා. ඉන්පසු බම්බලපිටියට ගියා. එහිදී ලොකු අතුලත් නංවා ගත්තා.
ඉන්පසු එය වැල්ලවත්තේ නිවසකට ගොස් පසුව එය දෙහිවල පිළියන්දල පාරට හරවා තරමක් දුරක ගොස් එහි නිවසක සිටි උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්න නංවාගෙන රත්මලාන ගුවන් තොටුපලට ගියා. එහි වික්රමනායක, S.B.W. සිල්වා, ජෙගනාදන්, ශර්නි විජේසූරිය, සුවාරිස්, ලිපිකරුවකු වූ ලෙනාඩ් යන අය එහි සිටියා.
අප සියලු දෙනාම ගුවන්තොටුපලින් මුහුණ සෝදාගත්තා. අපි උදේ ආහාරය ගත්තේ එහිදී.
8.30ට පමණ ගුවන් හමුදාවට අයත් විශේෂ ගුවන් යානයක් අප සියලු දෙනා නංවාගත්තා. SI පැටිකිරිකෝරාළ හැරුනු කොට අනෙක් අය අප සමග එහි විය.
උදේ 10 පමණ පලාලි ගුවන්තොටුපලට අපි ආවා. එහි සිට අප විශේෂ ජිප් රියකින් පොලිස් ස්ථානයක් කරා ගියා. එහෙම ගියේ ජෙගනාදන්ට තමන්ගේ මව බලාගැනීමට අවශ්ය වූ නිසාය. ඉන්පසු අප එහි සිට යාපනය කොටුව ඇතුලේ තිබෙන නිවසකට ගෙනගොස් එතැන් සිට බන්ධනාගාරයට ගෙන ගියා. එහි අපි වෙන වෙනම සිරමැදිරිවල රඳවා තබනු ලැබුවා. මා හා විරාජ් සිටියේ කොහොඹගහ මැදිරියේ සිරමැදිරි දෙකකය.
The aircraft
Early in the morning SI Patikirikorala put me in a jeep. Viraj and Sisil were in it. Then it went to Bambalapitiya, where Loku Athula was put aboard.
Then it went to a house in Wellawatte, turned onto the Dehiwala–Piliyandala road, went some distance, picked up Upali Seneviratne from a house there, and went to the Ratmalana airfield. Wickramanayake, S.B.W. Silva, Jeganadan, Sharni Wijesuriya, Suwaris and the clerk Leonard were there.
We all washed our faces at the airfield. We had breakfast there.
About half past eight a special aircraft belonging to the air force took us all aboard. Apart from SI Patikirikorala, the others came with us.
About ten in the morning we came to the Palaly airfield. From there we went by a special jeep to a police station, because Jeganadan wanted to see his mother. Then we were taken to a house inside the Jaffna fort, and from there to the prison. We were held in separate cells. Viraj and I were in two cells of the Kohombagaha ward.

උදේ 9.30ට පමණ මා බන්ධනාගාරයෙන් පිටතට ගෙන (IP සුවාරිස් විසින්) කොටුව තුළ වෙනත් බංගලාවකට ගෙන ගියා. ශිෂ්ය අංශයේ පොඩි කොතලාවල ද මා සමග බන්ධනාගාරයෙන් ගෙන ගියා.
එහි ASP S.B.W. පද්මා, වික්රමනායක, IP ජෙගනාදන්, ශර්නි විජේසූරිය හා උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්න යන අය විජේවීරගෙන් ප්රශ්න කරමින් සිටියා. විජේවීර සිටියේ ඉතාමත් පරාජිත ස්වරූපයකිනි. ජෙගනාදන් කොතලාවලගෙන් ඇහැව්වා වයස කීයද කියලා. ඔහු කිව්වා තමන්ගේ වයස. ඔහු කුඩා ළමයෙක්.
ඊට පස්සේ ජෙගනාදන් විජේවීරගෙන් ඇසුවා මෙවැනි කුඩා ළමයකු බෝම්බ නිපදවීම සඳහා යොදා ගන්නේ ඔහුට ඔය ඉලෙක්ට්රිකල් මැටීරියල් තේරෙන නිසා දැයි ඔහු ප්රශ්න කලා.
ඉන්පසු ඉයන් වික්රමනායක මගෙන් ප්රශ්න කලා මා අඩංගුවට ගත් පසු මට පහර දුන්නාද කියා. මම ඔව් යයි කීවා. ඔහු තවදුරටත් පහත සඳහන් කාරණා පිළිබඳව මගෙන් විනාඩි 10ක් පමණ ප්රශ්න කලා.
පැලවත්ත කඳවුර ගැන, 1971 මාර්තු වලදී කදානේ මා නැවතී සිටි ස්ථානයේදී විජේවීර විසින් පවත්වන ලද සාකච්ඡාවක් ගැන, මා පලමුවෙන්ම බෝම්බ සෑදීමට පටන්ගත්තේ විජේවීරගේ උපදෙස් පිට යන වග.
පලමුවෙනි හා දෙවෙනි කරුණු දෙක ඒ වන විටත් මා කටඋත්තරයෙන් පිළිගෙන තිබුණු නිසා (එයට හේතුව මා කටඋත්තරය දෙන විට ඒවා හෙලිදරව් වී තිබූ නිසාය) මා ඒවා දත් සැටියෙන් පිළිගතිමි.
3 වන ප්රශ්නය ගැන මා කීවේ මා පළමුවෙන්ම බෝම්බ සෑදීමට පටන්ගත්තේ විජේවීරගේ උපදෙස් යටතේ නොවන බවය. මේ නිසා IP උපාලි සෙනෙවිරත්න මගේ යටිබඩට පහරදෙමින් කීවේ මා තවදුරටත් නායකයා ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට උත්සාහ කරන බවයි.
විනාඩි 20කට පමණ පසු මා නැවත බන්ධනාගාරයට යවන ලදි.
About half past nine in the morning I was taken out of the prison (by IP Suwaris) to another bungalow inside the fort. Podi Kotalawala of the student wing was taken from the prison with me.
There ASP S.B.W. Padma, Wickramanayake, IP Jeganadan, Sharni Wijesuriya and Upali Seneviratne were questioning Wijeweera. Wijeweera had the look of a man utterly defeated. Jeganadan asked Kotalawala how old he was. He gave his age. He was a small boy.
After that Jeganadan asked Wijeweera whether a small boy like this was used for making bombs because he understood that electrical material.
Then Ian Wickramanayake asked me whether I had been beaten after my arrest. I said yes. He questioned me for about ten minutes more on the following matters.
The Palawatta camp; a discussion held by Wijeweera in March 1971 at the place where I was staying in Kadana; and whether I had first begun making bombs on Wijeweera’s instruction.
Since I had already accepted the first two matters in my statement (the reason being that they had already been disclosed when I gave it), I accepted them as I knew them.
On the third question I said that I had not first begun making bombs on Wijeweera’s instruction. At this IP Upali Seneviratne struck my lower abdomen and said that I was still trying to protect the leader.
About twenty minutes later I was sent back to the prison.
NOTE
Rohana Wijeweera, founder of the JVP, had been held in Jaffna since before the uprising. This is the only entry in which the two men are in the same room.

During this period we were all taken, on one day only, to the place where Wijeweera was being questioned, but they asked me nothing.

හිමිදිරි උදයේ අප බන්ධනාගාරයෙන් පිටතට ගෙන පලාලි ගුවන්තොටුපළට ජිප් රථයක ගෙන ආවේය. දවල් 12.30 පමණ වන විට අපි ගුවන් හමුදාවට අයත් ගුවන් යානයකින් රත්මලානට ආ අතර 1ට පමණ අපව බන්ධනාගාරයට බාර දෙන ලදි.
Early in the morning we were taken out of the prison and brought by jeep to the Palaly airfield. By about half past twelve we came to Ratmalana in an air force aircraft, and about one we were handed over to the prison.

He was returned to Colombo by air on 26 July 1971 and handed back to the prison. He was later sentenced to five years and was released under a general pardon in 1977. None of those years is written down here.
