VICTOR IVAN BIOGRAPHY
(1949 - 2025)

Victor Ivan was born Ivon Victor Abraham on June 26, 1949, at the Civil Hospital in Batticaloa, in the Eastern Province of Ceylon. Born to Sinhalese parents—Majuwana Kankanamge Francis, a Head Mechanic at the local powerhouse, and Lily Philomina Situge de Silva—his early origins were rooted in a multi-ethnic environment that would later characterize his pluralistic worldview.

However, the stability of his early childhood was shattered at the age of seven. His father, the family’s primary breadwinner, died tragically after falling from a tree, leaving his mother to raise Victor and his three brothers alone. This loss marked the beginning of a transient and disciplined upbringing.

To ensure his education continued despite the family’s crisis, Victor was sent to live with an aunt and later spent his formative years in boarding houses. He was educated at two of the island’s prestigious Catholic institutions: St. Aloysius’ College in Galle and St. Anthony’s College in Kandy.

Raised with strict Christian values, Victor developed a distinct sense of identity early on. Notably, he rejected the name “Abraham” given to him at birth—a name formally registered by the Batticaloa medical officer—and chose instead to define himself simply as Victor Ivan, the name the world would come to know.

Upon leaving school in the late 1960s, Victor Ivan stepped into a society rife with unemployment and deep-seated caste oppression. Like many young men of his generation, he became disillusioned with the traditional political establishment, which he saw as feudal and unresponsive to the suffering of the rural poor.

Seeking a radical solution to these structural inequalities, he was drawn to the emerging Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). He became a key student leader in the movement, driven by a desire to overthrow what he perceived as an unjust capitalist system.
